SFU'S 2022 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

A pair of world-renowned nature photographers and three Canadian authors who have contributed to our collective understanding of trans rights, racism and the trauma faced by residential school survivors are among the 11 distinguished individuals receiving an honorary degree from SFU.

These distinguished individuals exemplify how knowledge, skill and service to the community can help make the world a better place for all.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES TEAM SHINES BRIGHT

When the pandemic forced SFU to move to remote teaching, instructors found themselves teaching in an online environment, adapting course content on the fly and using technologies and platforms few people had heard of. It was a situation that called for emergency resources, targeted training and empathetic support. SFU’s Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE) was ready. The CEE team was recently honoured with a Staff Achievement Award for outstanding team performance.

A team effort across all three campuses delivered tens of thousands of COVID-19 rapid tests to faculty, staff and students. Learn more about the departments that collaborated on this important initiative to support the health and well-being of the SFU community.

A team led by archaeology professor Mark Collard used interdisciplinary methods to study rainfall, temperature and conflict in the Classic Period, revealing how a declining maize harvest destabilized Maya society—and what that means for climate action today.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

WORKING TOWARDS RECONCILIATION

At SFU, we continue the process of implementing the Walk This Path With Us report’s calls to action. In support of these actions, continuing employees are invited to register for the San’yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training program. The training introduces key aspects of cultural safety and addresses anti-Indigenous racism. This is self-paced and facilitated training, over an eight-week period, with new sessions starting monthly.

UPCOMING BURNABY CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION (MARCH 21 - APRIL 8)

Please be aware of an upcoming disruption to all traffic (vehicles including bus service, pedestrians and cyclists) in the north lane to and from the West Parkade, off University Drive West. Motorists can continue using University Drive West when travelling to the West Parkade and detour signs will guide you to the Gaglardi Way entrance.

On March 16, VP-Academic Communications emailed a survey to all faculty. Please complete by Wednesday, March 30, 5 p.m. It should take no longer than 10 minutes. Input is appreciated and will ensure we continue to provide strategic and effective communications going forward.

FEATURE EVENT

BOOK CLUB: ELOQUENT RAGE

March 24 | Hosted by SFU History

SFU HISTORY READS is a free, public book club that meets once a year to discuss a recent title of historical significance.

This year's read is Eloquent Rage, by author, professor, activist and cultural critic Brittney Cooper. Far too often, Black women’s anger is caricatured as ugly and destructive, a threat to the social fabric of civil society. Cooper shows us that there is more to the story—eloquent rage is what keeps us all honest and accountable, and reminds women everywhere that they don’t have to settle for less.
