UNIVERSITY NEWS

SFU FORMALLY DECLARES A GLOBAL CLIMATE EMERGENCY

In January, the SFU Board of Governors approved a move to change its institutional language and has formally declared a global climate emergency. This goes beyond simply acknowledging that we face a climate emergency—it signifies the initiation of “emergency mode” and a shift away from business as usual, empowering the university to take unprecedented executive action to mitigate and adapt to the emergency.

 

SFU TO ADVANCE AGRITECH, WEARABLES SECTORS WITH $11.8M IN FEDERAL RESEARCH FUNDING

Advances in technology that will help grow B.C.’s agriculture sector and produce ‘wearable’ healthcare solutions designed to improve quality of life will be possible through new federal funding for two new SFU initiatives.

 

OVERCOMING HEALTH INEQUITY FOR THOSE IN STIGMATIZED POPULATIONS

Faculty of Health Sciences assistant professor Travis Salway has received the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC’s Early in Career Award. Recognizing contributions made by scholars at relatively early stages in their careers, Salway's award is for his work with and for Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (2S/LGBTQ) people.

 

What do a team of students from Computer Science, English and Philosophy have in common? Together, they're walking away with second place in a national hackathon competition, for their app idea to foster a sense of community for SFU students. The event celebrates entrepreneurial-minded Canadian students and empowers them to solve real problems facing their post-secondary campuses under this year’s theme of wellness.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

UPCOMING ROAD UPGRADES AT BURNABY CAMPUS

This summer, road work and upgrades on University Drive East (UDE) will result in limited access to vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian traffic April 18–September 2. Upgrades include installation of street lights on UDE (between Gaglardi Way and University High Street), widening the multi-use path and repaving Nelson Way and UDE. Learn how these changes may affect your commute.

 

CHRONIC PAIN PARTICIPANTS WANTED: VR RESEARCH

The Pain Studies Lab is looking for chronic pain patients to participate in a Virtual Reality (VR) study, exploring how different navigation strategies help patients maneuver in a virtual environment. Eligible participants should be age 40+ with a diagnosis of any form of chronic pain lasting more than six months, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, lower back pain, neck pain or complex regional pain syndrome. Interested individuals should email jimmy_shan@sfu.ca and will be compensated $20 for their participation.

BLACK STUDENT CENTRE: STUDENT TOWN HALL

April 7 | Hosted by SFU Student Services

Please share this opportunity with your communities and networks. The first SFU Black Student Centre Town Hall is open to current Black-identifying SFU undergraduate and graduate students only. Attendees are invited to share their vision for the centre, provide input on what they would like to see come out of this project and help shape the future of the Black student experience at SFU. Hear from and provide feedback to community organizers leading the charge to transform university spaces to promote Black students’ psychological safety, academic success, cultural connections, empowerment and joy.

How do you handle a situation when none of your students are participating or when one person dominates discussion? Would you like to practice how to facilitate a session when the discussion gets heated or when one student makes an inappropriate comment? Come ready to role play with your multilingual peers and practice some common scenarios in this workshop by the Centre for Educational Excellence.

April 27 & May 4

This program hosted by SFU Human Resources is a two-part series on essential mindset and core skills for being more coach-like in your approach as a leader. Blending theory with demonstrations and practice, leaders will learn the art of coach-like presence and skills in their day-to-day, development and feedback conversations with their teams, direct reports and peers.
