PRESIDENT JOY JOHNSON SPEAKS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF EMBRACING DIFFERENCE

“To quote a familiar phrase: ‘The paths to the future are not found, they are made.’ As president of SFU and someone who believes passionately in the value of higher education, I want universities to help carve out that path.”

In a recent talk, SFU President Joy Johnson discussed how embracing difference at all levels of the university helps us create a path towards a better future.

WELCOME NEW PUBLIC POLICY DIRECTOR

In January, SFU’s School of Public Policy welcomed Genevieve LeBaron as its new director. LeBaron is an internationally-recognized expert on global supply chains, public policy, and labour and human rights.

 

ROBOTS THAT CAN TAKE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE?

SFU mechatronics researcher Woo Soo Kim is advancing how robots could carry out basic health care tasks in certain conditions, including in remote regions or where minimal personal contact is needed. 

Together with PhD student Tae-Ho Kim and a team in SFU’s Additive Manufacturing Lab, the researchers have replaced the traditional blood pressure procedure with leech-inspired origami sensors that can be integrated onto the fingertips of a humanoid-sensing robot.

 

INVESTIGATING ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURES IN THE WORKPLACE

SFU's Ian McCarthy, and Beedie School of Business colleagues David Hannah, Leyland Pitt and Jane McCarthy from Langara College investigated what they describe as workplace BS: what it is, what it isn’t and how it impacts our well-being. They also introduce a framework and four-step guide to help us sniff out and mitigate these types of workplace issues.

RECYCLE YOUR FACE MASKS ON CAMPUS

A new recycling program at SFU aims to prevent thousands of disposable masks from ending up in a landfill. Students, faculty, staff and visitors are encouraged to dispose used masks into a recycling receptacle at any SFU campus.

 

IT SERVICES OUTAGES & UPDATES

AEM WILL BE UNAVAILABLE ON FEBRUARY 23

AEM Author (author.sfu.ca) will be unavailable on Wednesday, February 23, from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. for a scheduled upgrade. All AEM websites will continue to be publicly accessible on and off-campus. Please email cms-help@sfu.ca if you experience any issues after the planned outage.


FINS AND MYINFO WILL BE UNAVAILABLE FEBRUARY 24-27

FINS and myINFO will be unavailable from Thursday, February 24 to Sunday, February 27, to accommodate the Research Enterprise Systems Program – Project 1 implementation and launch. Access will resume on Monday, February 28. Outage updates will be posted on Twitter (@SFU_IT). 

 

Faculty, staff and students with knowledge and experience in reducing, preventing and responding to sexual violence are invited to submit their expression of interest. The deadline is Wednesday, March 16.
