SFU: WHAT'S NEXT?

TAKE A SURVEY, HELP SHAPE SFU'S FUTURE

President Joy Johnson is currently asking the community "SFU: What's Next?" and the conversation is already underway! In addition to the discussion taking place ThoughtExchange, SFU has launched an anonymous survey to gather input. The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and will help define SFU's vision, purpose, commitments and priorities.

SFU COMMUNITY REDUCES ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT BY PURGING PLASTICS

Since starting the shift a couple of years ago to eliminate the sale of more than 260,000 individual-use plastic water bottles annually on our campuses, other than for accessibility purposes, SFU has since ended the sale of all other plastic bottle beverages.

“It’s not just about bottled water at one school. It’s about mobilizing change by engaging students, raising awareness and moving the needle on what is possible," says Mireta Strandberg-Salmon, founder of SFU’s Ban the Bottle.

 

HOW GOOGLE SUBTITLES HELP CONSPIRACY THEORIES THRIVE

Researchers with The Disinformation Project at SFU's School of Communication have published study findings looking at the role of Google autocomplete subtitles in legitimizing conspiracy theorists, which mislead the public and amplify extremist views.

 

SFU’s Health and Counselling Services (HCS) is an important resource that many students access during their degree. 

In this Q&A, meet archaeology student Ashley Chamberlain and learn how HCS has positively impacted her university experience.

Using data from the Carbon Disclosure Project, Beedie School of Business professors Fereshteh Mahmoudian and Jamal Nazari have found that organizations who collaborate with others—both internally and externally—on projects to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions are more successful than those who go it alone.
