GLOBAL PROJECT CONNECTS ARTISTS AND ELDERS

SFU Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology professor Ryan Tacata discusses Artists and Elders, a project he launched with fellow artists Erika Chong Shuch and Rowena Ritchie during pandemic lockdowns to connect older adults with artists and help relieve isolation.

To date, the project has connected more than 80 artist-elder pairs from across the world who have co-created numerous performance pieces, a drag show, paintings and music.

A new study led by SFU’s Gerontology Research Centre found that women providing intensive, at-home care experienced higher levels of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggests more support is needed.

“More needs to be done to address these systemic issues, including workplace support and increasing community resources,” says SFU gerontology professor Andrew Wister, who is the study lead and centre director.

Several students, faculty and staff recently sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asking his government to strongly act to improve global vaccine equity and demonstrate leadership in committing to end the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Please reach out to fhscomm@sfu.ca if you would like a copy of the letter for your use.
