SCHEDULING TEAM SOLVES TIMETABLE PUZZLE AMID PANDEMIC UNCERTAINTY

Despite the disruption caused by the global pandemic, schedulers from across the university made sure SFU’s return to campus was relatively smooth for students. Learn more about how the team juggled classrooms and timing across all three campuses while factoring in COVID-19 restrictions. 

 

VIRTUAL TOOL TO ADVANCE EFFORTS TO CURB MENTAL HEALTH GAPS

According to SFU Health Science researchers, depressive and anxiety disorders among adults and children are common in Vietnam, a country of nearly 100 million people.

A virtual tool, the VMood app will link users with mental health resources and be available across the country to support people in self-managing their depression. Discover this initiative and how it builds on late SFU professor Elliot Goldner's research. 

 

PEOPLE OF SFU: MIKE KLASSEN, ENDPOINT DEVICE SPECIALIST, IT SERVICES

A problem solver through and through, Mike Klassen keeps devices at SFU running smoothly. In his 18 years with the university, he has seen the technology, people and institution itself change quite a bit—let’s just say when he started, he remembers an employee using a typewriter and even more using floppy disk drives.

 

MEET THE WINNERS OF SFU'S LARGEST ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETITION

The Coast Capital Venture Prize competition celebrates innovative ideas and entrepreneurial pursuits from the SFU community. The competition is open to early-stage business ventures founded by SFU students from undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, as well as staff, faculty and recent alumni. This year's innovations include wearable medical devices, next-generation electronic bicycles and more. 

 

Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology's new micro-credential will equip students with a broad understanding of management and leadership through agile and hybrid methodologies. The course will also address remote/hybrid work models following a significant shift in how we work. This is one of six new micro-credentials at five B.C. post-secondary institutions to receive funding from DigiBC. 

A case of food poisoning cannot just ruin a vacation; for people with comprised immunity, the very young or elderly people, foodborne illness and bacterial infections can be quite serious.

SFU cellular microbiology professor Julian Guttman studies bacterial infections such as E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria to understand how these microorganisms infiltrate and replicate within human tissue.

LABOUR-BASED GRADING: ANTI-OPPRESSION AND ANTI-RACIST ASSESSMENT

Re-imagining grading systems takes effort and willingness to push our boundaries. Labour-based grading (LBG) is one of many approaches focusing on feedback and dialogue over assessment, ranking and control. 

In this workshop, participants will learn the principles of LBG, discuss examples, share ideas and take the first steps in planning for courses using these principles. 

 

NAVIGATING DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS WITH EASE AND EXPERTISE

Difficult conversations emerge in all facets of our life, from home to work. Many of us respond in unhelpful ways such as avoiding or becoming defensive.

This interactive session uses neuroscience to help participants understand what causes difficult conversations, how to shift them into productive engagements as well as gain confidence in navigating them.
