SFU RESEARCHERS MAPPING LANDSLIDES THAT COULD WIPE OUT SALMON

A team of researchers from SFU's School of Environmental Science have returned to the scene of a massive 2018 landslide as part of a project aimed at preventing future extinction-level events.

On Nov. 1, 2018, the Big Bar landslide in British Columbia blocked the Fraser River, prevented salmon from getting back to their spawning grounds in the Upper Fraser Basin and threatened the future of the species.

Remediation efforts are ongoing to map the effects of the slide. Their work is part of a larger project aimed at assessing and mitigating the risk of landslides to critically important salmon in the Fraser River.

SHARING LIFE-LONG LOVE OF FOOTBALL WITH WOMEN AND GIRLS

Tiffani Martinez, the events coordinator for SFU Athletics and Recreation, turned a random invitation into a life-long passion for football. At a time when a sense of community has been impacted by the global pandemic, Martinez created something special.

Martinez scored a touchdown with her community work and she was recognized with an SFU Staff Achievement Award for Athletics.

INCREASING SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS AMONGST OLDER ADULTS

SFU’s Department of Gerontology Assistant Professor, Theodore D. Cosco, has been awarded funding to expand the impact of his research on increasing social connectedness amongst older adults. During the COVID-19 pandemic, videoconferencing and online communication platforms increased considerably. However, the uptake of these platforms tends to reflect a younger demographic. Cosco aims to bridge this digital divide by building a knowledge mobilization ecosystem.

Kieran Egan, one of the longest-serving members of the Faculty of Education passed away May 12. Starting work at SFU in 1973, Professor Egan was co-director for the Imaginative Education Research Group (IERG) and held the CRC in Cognitive Development and the Curriculum. He had a profound impact on education and educational practice and on the people who had the privilege of working with him.

Director and producer Danny Singer reflects on the making of "The Beginning" and its return to SFU 55 years later. The film has now been digitized along with more than 200 other student films from the School for the Contemporary Arts fonds, ensuring its preservation and potential to engage and inspire future generations of students, researchers, artists and film makers.

PERIOD PROMISE DONATION DRIVE

May 16 – 27 | Hosted by Simon Fraser University and United Way

SFU is participating in a donation drive of menstrual products as part of the United Way of British Columbia's Period Promise campaign. Donation bins are located across campuses.

Period poverty is much more common in our community than you would think. Half of all people who menstruate say that they have struggled to purchase product for themselves at some time in their life and more than a quarter have gone through a period without having any products.
