FROM CLASSROOM TO THE GLOBAL STAGE

Faculty of Education alumnus Annie Ohana was recently recognized as a finalist of the Global Teacher Prize. As the sole nominee from Canada, Ohana ranked among the top ten from a pool of more than 7,000 individuals. She is currently a social justice teacher and head of the Indigenous studies department at L.A. Matheson Secondary School in Surrey.

A new book, Conversations on Ethical Leadership: Lessons Learned from University Governance, edited by former dean of the Faculty of Environment Ingrid Leman Stefanovic opens a dialogue about responsible leadership in academic institutions. The book includes some cases studies, from former SFU administrators, that are increasingly topical in the wake of the pandemic and during a climate crisis.

SHARING FRONT-SEAT VIEW OF POLICE WORK IN THE CLASSROOM

SFU criminologist Rylan Simpson is working closely alongside police agencies in various settings. The result is a unique approach to teaching that highlights the overlaps between policing, research and practice. “Now more than ever, police agencies require evidence-based solutions to address pressing social challenges,” Simpson says. “My goal is to help promote evidence-based practice and decision-making within policing.”

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

As communicated in recent weeks, a hiring freeze is currently in effect at SFU due to a financial shortfall in the 2023/24 fiscal year. The hiring freeze requires all of us at SFU to review ways to operationalize and realize efficiencies while continuing to work towards our institutional priorities. To continue prioritizing SFU’s academic mission, teaching-related positions will be excluded from the hiring freeze. There are also exceptions to hiring for positions that are deemed essential to the functioning of the faculties or administrative departments.

It is hoped that a hiring freeze will reduce some expenses as groups work within existing staffing to improve operational efficiencies. We are committed to minimizing the impact of budget reductions as much as possible. To support this change and answer your questions, a hiring freeze FAQ page has been made available on the People, Equity and Inclusion (HR) website.

The Collective Agreement has been ratified by Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA) members and approved by the SFU Board of Governors. This agreement is consistent with the Province’s 2022 Shared Recovery Mandate and will be published online once updates are complete. The university thanks those who were involved in negotiations for a cooperative and mutually beneficial bargaining experience. Our focus now is to continue strengthening relationships in our community to support the academic success of our students and to nurture a thriving, world-class research environment at SFU.

ONE WEEK LEFT TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS

Do you know someone who undertakes projects, research or other work that impacts SFU and the communities we work within? Faculty members, sessional lecturers, teaching staff and administrative and support staff are eligible for this award.

Share comments with the search committee anonymously via websurvey, by attending an in-person or virtual open forum or through email. This is an opportunity to help shape the position description, which will also assist with the recruitment and evaluation of candidates. The deadline is December 4.

GOSFU MAINTENANCE UPDATES

There is a scheduled goSFU outage on November 25 from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. and on November 27 from 12:00 - 8:00 a.m. After access resumes, login may be slower due to heavy user traffic. Please contact its-help@sfu.ca for post-outage issues assistance.

UPDATES TO COURSE OUTLINE INFORMATION

SFU is aligning with other Canadian universities to protect the privacy of our students and faculty members by removing specific course location information from publicly accessible web pages. Building and room numbers will no longer be listed in public facing course outlines and Academic Calendars, although dates, times and campuses are still available on these pages. All relevant course location information, including buildings and rooms, remains accessible to currently enrolled students within goSFU for course planning, scheduling and enrolment.

Students enrolled in the Spring term may now be actively searching for housing. Do you have housing available to rent? Consider renting to an SFU student. For more information, visit SFU’s off-campus housing page to find out how to list a rental on Places4Students.
