INSPIRING STUDENTS TO STUDY STATISTICS

Florence Nightingale Day is more than a celebration of a pioneering statistician, it's an opportunity for The Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute to inspire a new generation in statistics and data science. “Celebrating the achievements of individuals from underrepresented groups, like the pioneering Florence Nightingale, can serve as a powerful inspiration,” says SFU Statistics lecturer Becky Lin. This year’s event, which happened last week, saw approximately 120 high school students participating on campus.

Fourth-year environmental science student Helen Wong led a sample collection event at Kitsilano Beach, inviting the public and peers in her program to get hands-on experience in microplastic research. “This research can also help identify potential sources of plastic pollution that can be managed in a more environmentally-friendly way,” Wong says.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

BOARD OF GOVERNORS & SENATE MEETING UPDATES

To ensure that SFU employees are informed of the latest news at the university, messages from the President, Board Chair and Provost are now available:

SFU's Equity Office has been working closely with internal partners to support our community during difficult times. We know that more is needed to co-create an SFU that we can all be proud of: where community members feel safe and know that their ideas, perspectives, identities and experiences are respected. This new strategy outlines steps for immediate action to address antisemitism and Islamophobia, alongside work already underway. A summary will be included in the Equity Compass Year One Report in June 2024.

The Community-Engaged Research During Health Crises handbook is a resource for researchers who wish to ethically engage with civil society organizations during health crises, such as infectious disease outbreaks.

This handbook contains a set of adaptable tools and considerations to facilitate collaboration and build capacity.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the game Interrobang, created by the Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office, there is a new way to access the game by downloading a print-and-play version.

Interrobang allows players to get to know themselves and their friends through a series of questions and exercises. This includes sharing thoughts, ideas and experiences on a range of topics related to relationships, consent, boundaries, cultural differences and sex positivity. The game is available to all SFU students, staff and faculty.
