TOWN HALL FOCUSES ON UNIVERSITY BUDGET AND FINANCES

More than 800 faculty and staff gathered virtually to learn more about the university's upcoming priorities from senior leadership at the January 31 town hall.

 
 

BOOSTING B.C.'S FOOD SOVEREIGNTY

New agritech projects, aimed at strengthening the province’s food production, have received funding from the Simon Fraser University-led B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation.

 

Canadian Institutes of Health Research have awarded science researchers $3.2 million. The new funding will be used to advance research on heart disorders, cancer and ageing.

NEW ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE ADDRESSES BARRIERS IN THE SFU CLASSROOM

Sean Heaslip and Jennifer Sanguinetti, co-chairs of SFU's new Accessibility Committee share their aspirations of an SFU experience deliberately designed for all. This committee, formed in response to provincial legislation, will support, facilitate and advise on improving accessibility at the university.

 

As the provincial budget 2024 approaches, SFU expects to learn if funding will be announced related to the SFU Medical School. If funding for the school, both capital and operating, is confirmed, the next steps involve seeking approvals from the Senate of SFU and the Board of Governors. This course provides a comprehensive overview on the tools, processes and available resources that SFU utilizes when responding to emergencies. Gain a deeper understanding on the emergency operations centre (EOC) functions and operations, why this model is used and the role the EOC plays with other stakeholders when managing a crisis or emergency response and recovery.

The Sterling Prize committee looks for candidates who are doing work that challenges complacency. Whether a student, a staff member, an SFU academic or a member of the community at large, the recipient is selected for decidedly unconventional and distinctly untraditional work that provokes a wide audience. The recipient receives a cash award of $5,000 and gives a public lecture. Submission deadline: February 15.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE HON. DR. JEAN AUGUSTINE

February 13 | Hosted by Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The Honorable Dr. Jean Augustine became the first Black Woman elected to the Parliament of Canada, Cabinet Minister and Deputy Speaker in 1993. At this Black History Month-featured virtual event, moderated by Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, SFU VP people, equity and inclusion, Augustine shares insights on leadership & Black flourishing in the 21st century.

 

The library at SFU serves everyone on three campuses and through its online resources and services. Share feedback about services offered at a Community Open Forum on February 14, 10:30-11:00 a.m., in the Bennett Library, Room 7200.

All academic units at SFU are reviewed periodically, usually every seven years, to ensure services are meeting needs and to continuously improve. This review is a comprehensive examination of the library, its services, collections and facilities.
