MPP Co-op Placement (Summer 2005): During the summer Karma worked on a number of projects for Tsawwassen First Nation, and has continued on part time during the school
year. She worked as an advisor for the community on matters relating to the development of a constitution. This involved developing and presenting materials to the community, as well as drafting various governance and constitution options for discussion.
In addition to that, Karma worked at coordinating the details of an agreement previously negotiated between the Nation and a local business. This has involved negotiating the details of an employment agreement, consulting with various leaders in the related business community, and implementing economic development initiatives.
Brief Work Experience: Karma has worked in a variety of fields including working with young offenders, developing and implementing life skills programming, and treating youth with alcohol and drug addictions. MPP Co-op placement (summer 2004): Ryan is involved in a Wildland Urban Interface Risk Assessment project with the City of Calgary Parks Department and the Calgary Fire Department. The focus of this project is to adapt an existing rurally focused method of risk assessment to incorporate the needs of a large municipality. The results of this process will lead to recommendations for policy changes to Planning and Development Bylaws, implementation procedures, and public consultation and education frameworks.
Work Experience: Ryan has had the opportunity to have worked with municipal, provincial and federal levels of government. He was a member of the B.C. Ministry of Forests Protection Branch for four summers working as a forest fire fighter. He was a research assistant for the Calgary Police Research and Development Unit, working on recruiting issues such as, attrition, retention, and recruit development. Ryan has also worked as a research assistant in Policy, Planning, and External Relations for the federal department of Western Economic Diversification. During this assignment he was responsible for writing policy briefs for ministers and deputy ministers, project development, stakeholder advocacy, and targeted policy
