Co-op Work Term Number
Position Title

In September of 2023, I began my first work term through SFU’s Co-operative Education Program. Eight months later, as my second consecutive term now comes to a close, I have begun to reflect on my experience as I consider its implications for my future as both a student and an employee.

For the past two terms, I have had the opportunity to work as a student kinesiologist at Twin Rinks Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic. Although I am a kinesiology major myself, before starting this position, I was unsure of what exactly being a kinesiologist entailed. For years I had studied concepts and theories but had very few opportunities to apply them in a practical, real-life setting. Working in this position has provided me with the hands-on experience I had been searching for, as well as greater insight into the world of injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Although I was tasked with several duties on the job, my main obligation was that of exercise prescription and instruction. During my training period, I was taught numerous exercises for improving strength, mobility, and flexibility. In addition, I was also instructed on how to appropriately construct an exercise program based on an individual’s abilities, limitations, and personal goals. Once I had completed my training period, I was ready to begin working with patients one-on-one. Each time a patient was sent down to the clinic’s gym, I was responsible for guiding them through their customized program, while ensuring that each exercise was performed safely and effectively. In addition, I was responsible for charting, and emailing programs to patients after each session.

Throughout my time at Twin Rinks Physiotherapy, I had the opportunity to work with a variety of patients, all with differing injuries and physical conditions. Through these interactions, I had the opportunity to apply preexisting knowledge and skills to provide patients with the best care possible. Over the past eight months, I have learned more than I would have ever expected, not only about the fields of kinesiology and physiotherapy but about my future career goals and aspirations as well. Ultimately, I have realized that I belong in a profession where I have the opportunity to help others in some capacity. Seeing patients improve over time and feeling like I made a difference, no matter how small,  has been the most rewarding aspect of this entire experience.
