IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT ETHICS SUBMISSIONS

Effective immediately, the existing Human Ethics system, Ethics Database, will be re-opened to accept new applications, amendments and renewals. This is due to ongoing challenges with the vendor in addressing issues found during testing of the Human Ethics module of SFU Research Gateway.

We thank you for your continued patience and understanding. Additional updates regarding SFU Research Gateway, will be posted on this site at https://www.sfu.ca/research-gateway/timeline/updates.html.

Should you have any other questions, please contact Dina Shafey by email at dshafey@sfu.ca or by phone at 778-782-9631.

DATA MIGRATION

Research Ethics is in the process of migrating research ethics application to the new Human Ethics online system.

If your initial research ethics application was approved before January 1, 2014, you must submit a new application in the new Human Ethics online system 6-8 weeks before the Annual Renewal Approval expires if you wish to continue conducting research with human participants.

If your initial research ethics application was approved after January 1, 2014, your research ethics application from the current Ethics Databasae will be migrated to the new Human Ethics online system where future amendments and annual renewals will be processed for your study.

COURSE ETHICS APPROVALS

All current course ethics approvals will expire on September 1, 2019. If you are an instructor or Faculty member and wish to have your students conduct human participant research in your course, you will be required to submit an application in the new Human Ethics system to obtain course ethics approval for any course that will run after September 1, 2019 or any course that does not yet have course ethics approval.

HARMONIZED STUDIES

As of November 1, 2019 all harmonized studies must be submitted through the Provincial Research Ethics Platform (PREP) through UBC RISe at https://www.rise.ubc.ca/

After the launch of the new Human Ethics online system harmonized studies will not be renewed in the SFU system and instead will need to be moved onto the PREP system. We recommend that you submit your application 4-6 weeks before the expiry date on your renewal letter. Please contact dore@sfu.ca if you have any questions or concerns about these changes or deadlines.

Please see the following for more information on PREP: https://researchethicsbc.ca/provincial-research-ethics-platform-launches-in-bc/
