Betty A. Schellenberg

Welcome to the home page of Betty A. Schellenberg, Professor of English at Simon Fraser University.

I am a specialist in eighteenth-century studies who received my training at the University of Winnipeg (BEd, BAHonours) and the University of Ottawa (MA, PhD). Some of my publications are Literary Coteries and the Making of Modern Print in England, 1740-1790 (Cambridge UP, 2016), an edition of the correspondence of the novelist Samuel Richardson (Cambridge UP, 2015), The Professionalization of Women Writers in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Cambridge UP, 2005), and Reconsidering the Bluestockings(Huntington Library, 2003, co-edited with Nicole Pohl).

My current research focuses on the relationship between literature circulating in manuscript and print publications. I have recently enjoyed teaching undergraduate courses titled "5 x 5: Essential Poetry of the Eighteenth Century" and "Sex, Sin, the Self, and the City." I supervise honours and graduate students working on all aspects of 18th century life.
