This is add-on to the "Notes on Chengdu" found in the Electric Trolleybus Website.
Chengdu, the capital of Sezchuan province, is right now one of the most commercialised and economically influential cities in southwest China. The city boasts a population of 5 million dwelling in its urban centre.
Starting from 1962, the city openned its first trolleybus service and by the time of 80's there was a total of 5 trolleybus routes serving as the city's trunk transit routes that reached almost every corner of the inner urban area.
Three of the five routes (namely Route No.1 , 4 and 5) started from the city's central passenger railway station called "Chengdu North Train Station". The three routes would then split into three different directions shortly after leaving the railway station and each would terminate at east end, west end and south end of the city.
Overlapping each other on quite a long stretch of their routes, Route NO. 2 and 3 bascially ran across the city from west end to its east end. However they do terminate at different terminuses.
Most of the vehicles operated in Chengdu were artics locally manufactured alongside with some classic models purchased from Shanghai Trolleybus Plant. The trolleypole type used in Chengdu followed the design identical of their counterparts in Shanghai as well.
Sadly, the system didn't manage to survive till today. 2006 is already the 10th anniversary year since the closure of the system, which was closed on June 12 1996.
I have found some trolleybus photos of Chengdu and you may be interested to take a look at them.
