A warm welcome from Michael Stevenson

Thank you for visiting Simon Fraser University online. It’s my pleasure to invite you to explore SFU in person or on the web. I am confident you will discover an exciting world of intellectual energy and creative opportunity.

Committed to discovery, diversity, and dialogue

In just four decades, SFU has earned an international reputation for innovative teaching, research, athletics, and community outreach. With three distinctive campuses, more than 800 accomplished tenure-track faculty and over 30,000 talented graduate and undergraduate students, SFU consistently ranks as one of Canada’s leading research-based comprehensive universities.

Effective April 2009, SFU adopted a new faculty structure.  In addition to the existing faculties of Science, Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Business, and Health Sciences, the Faculty of Applied Sciences has been reorganized and two new faculties have been added.  A new Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology will house the School of Communication, the School for the Contemporary Arts, the School of Interactive Arts and Technology, and the Master of Publishing Program.  A new Faculty of Environment will be comprised of the Centre for Sustainable Community Development, the Department of Geography, the Environmental Science Program, Development Studies, and the School of Resource and Environmental Management.  New interdisciplinary programming is also under development for this Faculty.  The Faculty of Applied Sciences now consists of the School of Computing Science and the School of Engineering Science.  The School of Kinesiology has adopted a new name, the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology, and is now part of the Faculty of Science.

These changes will enhance SFU's ability to recruit and retain students and faculty in areas of increasing demand and importance, and will better position the university for future growth and advancement.

My most recent reports to the community highlight the remarkable students, faculty, and staff who have distinguished this university with their outstanding commitment to our institutional values of discovery, diversity and dialogue. You’ll also find information about the many construction projects that are key to SFU’s dynamic future.

Delivering breadth, depth and global focus

In the classroom, the laboratory and even in the international arena, SFU continually sets new standards of excellence.

We recently adopted new curriculum and admission requirements to increase the emphasis on writing and quantitative skills, as well as breadth of study, for undergraduates. Our researchers have secured more than $86 million in sponsored funds, and consistently finish at or near the top in Tri-council research income per faculty member. We continue to develop strong international partnerships to better prepare our students to live and work in a global context. And we continue to provide the most competitive and exciting environment for athletics and recreation.
