Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
Two events, one strong theme
Last week was an exciting one with the official launch of our new Strategic Vision on Monday followed by our Outstanding Alumni Awards ceremony on Tuesday.
What was particularly gratifying was not only the positive feelings and feedback generated by each of these events, but how they validated each other.
The launch highlighted SFU’s strengths with respect to engaging students, research, and communities, and showed how these strengths could be harnessed and linked to distinguish SFU as “the leading engaged university."
In this regard, the launch video featured ways in which SFU students and researchers gain from a dynamic interaction with each other and with communities at home and abroad.
This same theme was taken up by the recipients of this year’s Outstanding Alumni Awards, all of whom spoke powerfully about how their experiences at SFU helped to prepare them for work in their various fields of endeavour, which spanned academic research, community work, medicine, and military service.
In doing so, they reflected on the distinctive ways in which their SFU education provided them opportunities to engage beyond the classroom, and how that engagement had contributed to their success.
Taken together, the two events spoke powerfully about SFU’s commitments to education, research and community, and the capacity of these overlapping strengths to impact human lives and shape a compelling vision.
