Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President

Have a great summer!

July 06, 2017

It’s hard to believe that we’re already halfway through the calendar year. It turns out that, for universities, time flies when you’re engaging the world.

And what a remarkable six months it has been! We’ve hosted a wide variety of academic conferences and community events, held gatherings at home and away for alumni and friends, launched new programs and initiatives (including Canada’s most powerful academic supercomputer), celebrated with our graduates at convocation, and so much more.

I hope you’ll find time to take a well-earned break over the summer, and I also encourage you to join me and others from SFU at some of our summer programs and events.

The seventh annual Indian Summer Festival takes place from July 6 to 15 at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts and various Lower Mainland venues. SFU is the Founding Partner of this celebration of art, culture, film, food and ideas, and we look forward to welcoming friends, old and new.

The President’s Employee Barbeque will be held on the Burnaby Campus on July 12 from noon to 2:00 pm. All SFU employees are invited to enjoy some great food, conversation and live music near the AQ reflecting pond. Don’t forget to bring your own water bottle, lawn chair or blanket and sunscreen, as we are hoping for a sunny day.

Looking back at everything we’ve accomplished during the first half of 2017, I’m impressed and inspired by the passion and talent of our university community. It takes a huge commitment of time, dedication and energy to make SFU the great university that it is, and I am forever grateful to all those who contribute to this effort.

Have a great summer and see you back in September – refreshed and ready to engage anew.
