Long service awards honour SFU employees

November 23, 2017

At the heart of any great organization are its people – the talented and dedicated individuals who every day make a positive difference in their workplaces and communities.

As a community-engaged research university – one that is ranked as Canada’s leading comprehensive university and was recently named one of its Top 100 Employers  – SFU owes our successes to the hard work and commitment of our employees.

Each year I host a luncheon to celebrate those faculty and staff members who have reached their 25 years of service milestone. Not only have they dedicated their careers to SFU, but these individuals have helped to steer the university through major changes.

Imagine a workplace without the internet or smart phones – 25 years ago these tools didn’t exist.

Neither did our Surrey campus, which was established in 2002 and has since catalyzed the development of Surrey City Centre.

Our Vancouver campus has grown from one location, Harbour Centre, to its current eight locations and the largest post-secondary presence in the city.

Our Burnaby Campus has also seen profound changes over the past twenty-five years with the construction of new classroom and laboratory spaces, the development of UniverCity, the creation of the Trottier Observatory, and the opening of a major new Data Centre.

During this same time, our student body has grown from 21,000 to 35,000 and we have added significant new programs while extending others. Our co-op program, for example, has grown to become one of the most extensive in the world, and now serves over 8500 students a year.

None of this progress would have been possible without the commitment and hard work of our longstanding employees. They have served this institution incredibly well and have helped us to become an award-winning workplace and a community-engaged, world-class university.

To those celebrating 25 years – and to all SFU employees who have helped us to grow and flourish – I say thank you and keep up the great work.
