Petter's Perspective: SFU celebrates 150,000 engaged graduates

October 04, 2017

Simon Fraser University celebrates a significant milestone during this week’s Fall Convocation ceremonies as we reach and surpass 150,000 graduates.

Alumni are Simon Fraser University's greatest contribution to the world. Endowed with the knowledge, skills and values they acquired at SFU, our graduates are making a positive difference to their communities through their professional pursuits, volunteer efforts, and personal endeavors and passions.

The SFU Alumni Appreciation Project shares some of their inspiring stories – and you are welcome to share your own messages of appreciation.

In addition to celebrating the achievements of our graduates, SFU this week will bestow honorary degrees on three exceptional individuals:

Ivan Coyote (Doctor of Laws, honoris causa) is an award-winning storyteller and author, and a strong advocate for Canada's LGBTQ2S community. The author of 11 critically acclaimed books, Coyote is also an educator and renowned live performer.

David Gillanders (Doctor of Laws, honoris causa) is known as one of Canada's best real estate lawyers. As founding chair of the SFU Community Corporation, he led the development of UniverCity, which is recognized around the word as a model sustainable community.

Robert Williams (Doctor of Laws, honoris causa) is an urban planner, entrepreneur and former provincial MLA and cabinet minister. His leadership, inspiration and action over the past 60 years have helped to improve and transform BC communities and the lives of their citizens.

As well, the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Jim Derbyshire.  As founding director for SFU’s Coast Capital Savings Venture Connection he mentored thousands of entrepreneurs and developed dozens of new ventures, and also contributed to the success of SFU’s VentureLabs business accelerator.

Congratulations to these outstanding honorees and to all our SFU graduates. I commend you on your achievements, and I am excited for what more you will accomplish as SFU alumni.
