This dialogue examined when the duty to protect and intervene in nations involved in civil conflict applies. At this event, Lieutenant-General Dallaire launched “A dollar a Student for Darfur” — a fundraising campaign to assist aid agencies working in Sudan — led by Simon Fraser Student Society President Clement Abas Apaak.

Lieutenant-General the Honourable
Roméo A. Dallaire, OC, CMM, GOQ, MSC, CD, (Ret'd), Senator

A highly decorated artilleryman, Lieutenant-General RomŽo Dallaire served in the Canadian Forces in a series of increasingly demanding command and staff appointments before retiring after over three decades of service.

Upon his return from serving as Force Commander of the UN mission to Rwanda, for which he was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross, Dallaire received the Order of Canada, one of Canada's highest honours, and was awarded the United States Legion of Merit.

Dallaire is now Special Adviser to the Canadian International Development Agency and to the Minister of International Cooperation on War-Affected Children. He is author of Shake Hands With The Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda, which has garnered numerous literary awards. Lieutenant-General Dallaire was summoned to the Senate in March 2005.
