Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs
Recently named among the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine, Jeffrey Sachs is the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is also Director of the United Nations Millennium Project and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, the internationally-agreed goals to reduce extreme poverty, disease, and hunger by 2015.
Jeffrey Sachs is internationally renowned for advising governments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa on economic reforms and for his work with international agencies to promote poverty reduction, disease control, and debt reduction of poor countries.
Prior to joining Columbia, Jeffrey Sachs spent over twenty years at Harvard University, most recently as Director of the Center for International Development. He is the author of The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time in which he makes a moral, economic, and political case for countries and individuals working to reduce poverty.
This forum is presented in association with Simon Fraser University's Dean of Arts and Social Sciences and its Department of Economics, and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada's “Asian Economies Speaker Series.” It is part of a series of colloquia that are preparatory to the UN World Urban Forum III to be held in Vancouver in June 2006.
