   SFU President's Faculty Lecture Series

President's Faculty Lecturer: Dr. Alexandra Fedorova

Alexandra Fedorova is an Associate Professor of Computer Science.
She earned her doctorate at Harvard, where she worked in close
collaboration with Sun Microsystems Labs on improving efficiency of
server systems. Dr. Fedorova is a co-founder of the systems research
group at SFU and is a 2012 recipient of a prestigious Alfred P. Sloan
fellowship.

Computer Systems and Energy

Computer systems consume lots of energy. As they become more
pervasive in our lives, they also become more important contributors to
world-wide consumption of electricity. In 2005, data centers world-wide
spent as much energy as the entire country of Mexico! Since then,
consumption rose by an additional 60%. In this talk I will explain why
computer systems are energy-hungry and how research in computer science
can mitigate the dangerous trend.
