Biography
Helena (she/her) is a second-year Master’s student in Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and a recipient of an NSERC CGS-M scholarship. She holds a Bachelor of Environment (BEnv) in Resource and Environmental Management, along with a certificate in Sustainable Community Development.
Helena’s research focuses on the economics of ocean and marine resource use. In a recent study, she quantified which countries benefit from the expansion of marine industries and analyzed the mechanisms that drive patterns of inequality. Currently, she explores how profitable but unsustainable industries, such as offshore oil and gas and deep-sea mining, receive justification and investment despite limiting equitable and sustainable outcomes. Her work aims to inform strategies that support a more just and sustainable Blue Economy.
In her free time, Helena enjoys audiobooks, exercising, and spending time outdoors with her son.
