Presentation Requirements

The followings count as public presentations:

  1. A refereed conference paper on which the student is listed as an author. (abstracts don't count) The conference must be approved by the Graduate Program Chair (GPC). Student and non-academic conferences are specifically excluded.

  2. A presentation at the Research Colloquium. The Colloquium should accept student presentations if they serve the purposes of the Colloquium -- being accepted or invited to present at the Colloquium is a distinct honour. The presentation will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.

  3. A presentation to an established multi-faculty group holding a regular seminar series within SIAT. This must be approved by the GPC. For instance, presentations to the LORNET seminar series were counted while that series was being held. Such presentations must be announced to the SIAT research community through email.

  4. Any other venue approved by the GPC. For instance, in the past  the GPC gave credit to students who both (1) presented at the FAS student poster fair; and (2) presented their poster before the fair to a special critique session of the Research Colloquium.

Each Master's student must make one public presentation of their work. Each PhD student must make two. These are in addition to the milestone presentations of a Thesis defense, comprehensive exams and a research proposal  (the latter  two are for PhD students only).
