REEL 31 COMMENTARY

1. Note the quiet ambience and the regular working rhythm of planing. (see also Reel 30, last take.)

2. Good, but short take. At end some disturbance on right channel.

3. More talk on building techniques, naming of boats (3'00"), history of business and present situation, boat building design before motors existed (5'30") and some small talk.

4. About lighthouse keepers. This talk is outside in a very quiet ambience.

5. Car motor off. (See also notes on data sheet.)

6. Mobile speaker and PA system, warning the public about fire hazards; siren (35").

7. Another warning over PA system. Transition into Bill's Store, lunch counter (50").

8. Transition into store disturbed by microphone rumbles. Ambience inside consists of people and kids talking, cash register, radio playing very quietly in background. Note one woman talking continuously in foreground, telling stories. Good, lively ambience, fairly muted.

9. Beginning of take car "laying rubber". Asking information on Ross Farm.

11. First minute full of disturbances from microphone. Ordering (2'00"). Note continuous fan noise, and some men's voices in background. Restaurant has a very squeaky door. Whenever it opens traffic sounds from outside enter. Putting down of cutlery (3'20").

12. Putting down of cups and plates.

13. Fan is turned down in this take, ambience a lot quieter. One guy keeps coughing (2'00"), car horn (2'55") from passing car.

15. Somebody walks in (1'00") and conversation in room becomes a lot more lively. Fan up again, voices masked more (3'10").
