REEL 30 COMMENTARY

1. Very quiet ambience. First minute women talking in distance (see also Reel 29, last take). The occasional car passing. The rest of the time it is so quiet that nothing seems to be on the tape. Microphones pointing south.

2. Totally quiet again, with some distant crickets singing (or are they telephone or electrical wires?). Microphone pointing north.

3,4. Scan done with motor off.

8. Very quiet interior ambience, with quiet scraping and clanking of mixing glue in a bowl. Note the wooden sound of footsteps (1'30"). Hammering of wooden plugs (2'25"), very muted sound in this "wooden" interior.

9. D. Stevens describes process of shipbuilding. Starting planing (3'30"), sharpening (4'20"). Note peculiar rhythm of planing (5'20"): thump, scrape, scrape, thump, scrape, scrape, etc. (More of this on next reel.)
