REEL 35 COMMENTARY

1. Continued from previous reel. Buoy better audible in this take. Gives it an eerie atmosphere.

2. Missed the noon gun! Most dominant sound is the hum from the ventilation system of a nearby chocolate plant. Distant traffic. Airplane (2'20").

4. Same ambience. Footsteps and voices are mostly drowned out by hum from factory. Car starting 1'10"; some cars passing. Bells starting 2'50", fairly distant, also masked a great deal by fan noise. 3 bells ringing in this pattern (...) very regularly, mechanically. Gets boring after a while. End at 5'20". See also more commentaries on data sheet.

5. Recordists come down and meet Mrs. Polk. She makes breakfast for them, chats about what she does, how long she has been having guests. Talks about her daughter, laughs a lot. For first two minutes radio going in background. She turns it off. She still cooks on old coal stove, shows it to them, talks about it, it's usefulness. Turns on radio again (5'40"). Water warming and getting to a boil in background. Tells stories about other guests. Conversation about activities of day, meanwhile news on the radio.

6. Mrs. Polk gives directions to fish plant.
