REEL 36 COMMENTARY

1-3. Very loud unloading machinery. See data sheet for levels.

4. Steam puffing out at regular intervals, creates a nice relaxing rhythm, accompanied by a relatively quiet hum from plant, and by seagulls.

5. Mostly hammering, wood sounds, masons talking while working. The occasional saw (0'25", 0'55", 1'35") and a chainsaw revving in background (1'15", 4'55"). Very interesting, active take. Distant traffic rumbles.

6. Ambience consists of distant traffic., and the masons hammering and sawing with the occasional chainsaw. Hammering creates short echo, gives recording a nice feel of distance. Clock bell rings (1'55"). (See data sheet for further details on clock and tower.)

7. The slightly lop-sided ticking (tocking) is accompanied by a 60 cycle hum from fluorescent light. Some people talking downstairs (1'50").

8. Recordists hoped for environmental sound tapes, but tapes consist of music and conversation. Talk about recorded tours in fortress and their usefulness.

9. Talking to an old couple.

10. Recordists inside when train starts. Beginning distorted. Whistle (0'50") distorted, levels down for second recording of whistle (1'05"), then up again (1'20"). Train stops (2'10"), puffing and letting out steam.

11. Better take of both whistle and train ride. Train bell throughout. When train is moving note the many creaks and cracks inside.

13. Complex rhythms produced by shoveling and steam puffing. Great take, except for some level changes.

15. History of this steam engine, accompanied by all its sounds in the background while talking.

16. Begins with conductor announcing departure, then whistle blowing, bell ringing, train cars passing, wheels screeching on rails, whistle again, etc. Good take.
