REEL 59 COMMENTARY

1. Levels are somehow very low in this take. Talk about bells, their age, etc.

2. Recordist fumbling around with microphones during first minute. Quiet ambience here with distant city swoosh, some kids talking (English). Plane in distance (1'50"). The occasional car passing. People talking (Scandinavian language?) and passing (3'30"). Airplane, people walking by (5'20"). There are people's voices in distance almost continuously. Noon gun (9'45"). Note echo after several seconds. Is almost as loud as real blast. People passing (10'15"). Car door (10'40") and car starting (11'00").

3. Recordists entering building, note the incredible quietness inside.

4. Repeat of same. First they are inside, walking outside, arguing. As they enter, note again extreme quiet. Only some voices in background. Then conversation with woman in convent (in French). Reverberant ambience. Reverberant voices in background after conversation is ended (3'45"). Walking back outside, good take.

5. Drivers of calèche soliciting business. They have good voices. Lots of people talking. But not much calling happening (see also notes on data sheet). One horse buggy leaves (3'40") and another one comes in right after. Truck driving up and idling (6'00"). Horse pissing (6'30").

6. Playing on paved vacant lot. Traffic passes in waves. Kids shouting. Note hockey sticks banging against each other, scraping on ground. Reverberant space, only noticeable in silent sections, between traffic. Kid coming up to microphone (2'15"). At end kid singing very loudly for a while.
