REEL 60 COMMENTARY

1. Relatively quiet. Lots of people's voices and footsteps. Bus stopping and idling (2'30"), motorbike immediately after, car horn (3'45"). Very busy ambience.

2. Very quiet between traffic waves. Bells ringing (3'20"-7'25") close by, three bells. Highest bell begins, then middle one, then lowest, then reverse process at end, so that highest keeps ringing at the end. Nice fade out. Horse buggy (8'00"- 8'30") passing close by. Good car horn (11'00"). People walking by occasionally.

3. Recordists walking inside, note the quietness in store. Nice lively chat, people in store speak with French accent. Radio going in background. Talk about carnival parades in February.

4. Talk with three people. Topics of conversation are (while radio plays in background and a 60 cycle hum): languages, ferry (3'00"); waterfalls close to Quebec (5'00"); memories and sounds of Quebec during childhood (9'30"); bells in Quebec (10'20"); streetcars (12'00"); street criers (13'00"); market in the summer (13'30"). Somebody enters store (14'45"), cash register and wrapping sounds (15'40").
