REEL 80 COMMENTARY

1. Waiting for bells that never rung. Very little activity. Ignition buzzer as car door opens (0'15"), distant aircraft droning (2'30"). Cars passing occasionally. Otherwise very quiet.

2. Calls and shouts, hockey stick sounds and distant traffic. Almost constant aircraft noise: jet approaches (0'40") and a second one (2'30"), two cars pass close by (3'00"), propeller aircraft approaches (3'30"), more planes (4'45"), car close by (6'10"), another plane (6'20") and game ends. The game seems troubled with bad temper, mostly the kids complain to each other.

3. Recorded from car, parked on street by a park with a family enjoying the snow together. Children's voices, voice of father (2'30"), laughter (3'10"). Traffic often masks the voices.

4. Daytime traffic sample, quite busy in comparison to late night sample (reel 78, A 2 and 3). Car horns (1'10", 1'55", 2'15").

5/6. 90 mph ambience! Loud horrible roar.

7. Quiet village ambience, wintery day, voices get soaked up. Kids playing on sleds and toboggans. Car passes by (0'15", 0'55"), distant highway hum (1'45", 3'20").

8. Snowmobiles along main road. Machines approach, pass, then sit further away revving engines for a while and then disappear.

9. Recordists enter cafe. Lots of microphone disturbances until machine is placed down on table. Fan noise and conversation. Coffee is being poured (1'00"), something being wrapped or unwrapped (2'45"), closer voices here, thump of waitress' footsteps (4'15" and intermittent throughout), plate "lands" on recordists' table (4'45"), drumming fingernails, cough (5'30"), coffee arrives (6'00"), cutlery clatter on table (7'00"), some more food arrives (7'40"), lull in conversation and serving activity (8'30"-9'10"). This was the worst food the recordists ate on the whole trip!
