REEL 84 COMMENTARY

1. On the Trans-Canada Highway near Alaska, Saskatchewan. Regular high squeak from windshield wiper above low frequency roar of driving car.

2. Driving on black ice. The car has obviously slowed down from previous take and is slowing down even more, but black ice is certainly not audible. It's just slow driving.

3. Test of filtering process: going clockwise, starting at flat, through music, M+LFA, speech, S+LFA2, and roll off. Ice rain audible on windshield wiper

4. Recorded at 10:20 a.m., not very dense traffic. Construction (hammering and banging) in background. At 1'20" traffic surge as light turns green, same at 2'40". Car horn (1'55"). Foot steps and voices are audible in traffic lulls.

5. Very noisy, but recorded from distance. Part of generally loud construction ambience.

6. Change of levels. Same as above. Several jackhammers going at same time, often in interesting counterpoint.

7. Same as previous take.

8. Very heavy traffic ambience and construction noise. Car horn (2'45"), muscle car (3'10"), big truck (4'10"). Bells begin (4'30"), ringing 4 p.m. They sound prerecorded, are "buried" in heavy traffic.

9. Recorded from parking lot. Continuous broadband sound with strong whistle frequency. Interesting sound, lots of room for acoustic illusion.

10. Recorded from parking lot. Pronounced low frequency rumble. Hardly any high frequencies.

11. Note the quiet when car motor is turned off. Recordists talking to two men.

12. Some radio stations sound distant, with heavy static. Sometimes long silences between stations on dial. Gives sense of being quite far away from civilization.

13. Talking to woman, squeaky door throughout. Pretty awkward funny conversation.

14. Pretty bell in quiet ambience with beautiful vibrato in decay.

15. From different perspective. Squeak in bell tower audible during ring.
