REEL 124 COMMENTARY

1. Fast-flowing river, strong breeze (therefore the sequence had to be recorded from inside the car). Noisy river. This was a small one-man ferry similar to Little Fort, running mainly on river current on wire guide lines.

0'40" driving onto ferry, inside car.

1'05" winch sound.

2'50" arriving on the other side, radio in background.

3'20" rope winch.

3'30" clank of gate chain assembly unfastening.

4'00" rope tightening.

4'30" heavy chunking.

4'40" car starts, drives off.

2. Recorded from car window, dry rustle in aspen-type trees. Clicking locust, great dry sound.

0'30" grasshopper moves.

2'45" car passes, on dirt road.

3. A long wait (approx. 5'00") before the ferry starts up. River raging by, radio flowing along beneath the surface.

1'05" motor cuts after boarding. Noise of river and radio very lightly behind.

4'15" recordist mutters something.

5'00" clanks.

5'55" "whatya recording with this new toy?"

6'30" motor starts?

7'20" sound level of river drops.

7'30" clanks start again.

8'00" our car starts.

4. Opens driving onto ferry, other cars pulling up, rumble of diesel engines.

5. Leaving ferry.

1'15" vehicle ignitions.
