REEL 53

VANCOUVER ISLAND March 16, 1973

A

1. ON THE FERRY, PRINCESS OF VANCOUVER, conversation with young logger 16"00"

REEL 53 COMMENTARY

1. He approached the recordists, curious about the equipment, which was then switched on surreptitiously to record the rest of the conversation. Constant rattle and rumble in the background; this got to him in the end: he was standing up and he felt "a little..." after the fifteen minutes of conversation, and left. Take begins with talking about recording, then about his logging experience.

6'00" questions about sounds of logging -- wake-up siren, different types of log noise in the booms, shift signals, hearing loss and speech communication in pulp mill, rock music, "cardiograms" (i.e., audiograms), his own hearing (his mother is an audiologist), ear protection devices.
