REEL 82 COMMENTARY

1. The train is open-air, very small. One hears conversations from the seats in front of recordists (children and adults), the clickety-clack of the wheels, park sounds, train whistle. The smallness of the scale is great, cheerful. Starts with people sounds, lots of kids.

0'25" "You going to interview someone?", general talking, milling about.

0'36" train whistle.

2'12" train whistle, as it approaches.

2'30" train bell.

2'45" train in.

3'19" people board train, lots of excitement, gates of train clinking.

3'43" close-up voice of mother. Interesting spatial perspective on close-up to distant voices through the length of the train.

5'10" toot, steam gush, bell, train starts its trip. Good wheels-on-tracks sound, change in tempo, conversations.

6'31" squeaky wheels on tracks.

7'31" going over bridge.

8'09" train bell at crossing.

*8'30" tunnel, great excitement,

9'02" seaplane overhead, hardly audible behind din.

9'20" train crossing bell.

9'30" train whistle.

10'10" train whistle.

10'19" train whistle, as it approaches station.

11'10" end of ride, people getting out.

*12'30" portable radio strolls by, ambient park sounds to end (crows, seaplanes, voices).

*15'00" crow and seaplane.

2. Mostly footsteps, not much else, except for the ambient roar of the park (the park is surrounded and "infested" by traffic), the odd duck.

3. The railway passes through a thick evergreen forest, giving reverberation and space to the sounds. Crows sprinkle the entire sequence with their crowing.

*0'10" train passes by, toots, voices and then a portable radio.

1'25" another train, bell and motor sound.

1'55" whistle.

2'50" footsteps running past.

3'00" seaplane.

3'15" train passes and toots very close-by, good. This is a different train, with a different whistle.

3'40" first train toots.
