REEL 83 COMMENTARY

1. This is an old steam whistle with three main notes in it. Waiting in a nearby parking lot with ambient noise of the oil refinery (IOCO) in the background.

*1'30" whistle with wonderful echo and reverb. It takes quite long for the chord to voice itself, probably because the bell was cold, not having been blown since lunch. This whistle is plainly audible at SFU across the inlet. A local soundmark.

2. Waiting for second whistle in same position. Some seagulls and a crow, occasional car passing on gravel road.

*3'30" whistle, amazing attack of chord, distant car horn.

3. Same location.

*0'45" whistle toots.

4. Kittens close-up in very quiet space. Lots of microphone rumbling in first minute.

0'20" kittens squeaking,

5. Very quiet ambience, atmosphere of comfort.

0'10" squeaking and mother cat purring, great!

0'39" close-up purring.

0'52" close-up feeding.

1'45" good close-up purring.

2'02" squeaking of kittens, mother responding. Quiet after this, just regular purring.

4'47" close-up purring and more squeaking.
