REEL 90 COMMENTARY

1. Microphones are pointing into a metal sculpture near the mall at Simon Fraser University, containing some hungry young starlings. Jet overhead, voices and reverberant mall sounds.

2. Same as above, but a foot or so from the opening. The ugly sound is from the mother, who sat about 20' away with lunch in her mouth, and clearly annoyed at recordist.

1'40" move up to baby birds again, starlings quieten down intermittently.

4'10" sudden flap of wings.

3. Very hi-fi place. Each movement of the clerk is clearly audible, papers moving, tickets punched, change counted, etc. Recordist enters the station to buy a ticket. Train passing outside as recordist stands inside.

1'35" single horn toot and echoes,

2'10" clerk ends phone conversation and makes out the ticket.

2'50" "Whatya got there?"

*3'50" move outside to platform, slowly moving freight train, nice.

4. Moving out of station to catch passing train, very rattly and noisy. Distant diesel in background,

5. Some marvelous dialogue (some inaudible, however) between 4 friends. One of the wives is a real nag. Best and most intelligible on headphones.

*0'10" two couples arrive to buy tickets to town.

1'20" they find out the price has gone up. Telephone rings at end.

6. On the platform, waiting for the train to arrive, small talk in background. This is a good take with nice progression.

1'30" train arrives, bell ringing, steam hissing.

1'55" changing of levels.

2'15" passengers disembark, conversation.

3'15" "oh, you are going with us, too?"

3'20" recordist boards train, takes seat at nearest end of day coach car.

5'05" hissing noise stops, train is underway.

*7'20" whistle and Doppler shift reverse.

8'15" microphones move to vestibule between the cars, rail noise very clear, train is slowly accelerating (some distortion and compression),

10'00" back to coach.

12'10" walking through to rear of the train (some distortion, especially between cars, but also great rhythms of wheels on tracks).

Continued on reel 91.
