REEL 91 COMMENTARY

1. After the conductor's announcement, the passengers talk in anticipation about arriving. Someone is retiring to Vancouver, someone else has been away for 6 months, etc. The horn blows quite often during this sequence.

0'05" "Vancouver Station, 5 minutes", conductor, and train whistle.

6'55" question to recordist.

*8'55" train stops, passengers get up and leave.

10'40" recordist leaves train.

11'45" emerge into large hall of the station.

12'50" out to the street.

14'00" motorcycle starts up, takes off.

2. A very active time, lots of shouting, cheering, screeching. Jet overhead at beginning. Kids sound like a thousand birds! Great, very busy. A couple of hundred kids, playing several different organized games. Plenty of good cheering toward the beginning (girls).

5'15" "boooo" from some boys.

5'40" amplified megaphone voice and intermittently throughout.

6'55" bell-like signal,

3. Waiting for the noon shift whistle, recorded from Mosquito Creek Marina. Most of the whistles here are distant and somewhat covered up by ambient sound and broadband noise of a nearby stream or air valve. However, the signals build up to a good peak (4'05"), towards 12 noon.

1'40" small boat whistle.

3'25" distant whistle.

3'45" distant train whistle.

*4'05"-4'15" three whistles, the last one is the O Canada (B.C. Hydro) Horn.

4. At a construction site on Marine Drive. Pile driver with echo, regular beat, very powerful. Clean sound, little or no motor sound. Jet overhead at end.

5. Recorded at too safe a level -- very little ambient sound for context. Three rings from outside church, clangy bell with squeak after. Small aircraft in distance at end.

6. More rings, closer to the bell inside the church. One can hear the rope pulling the bell. Better level.

7. Some heavy-duty construction in background. Seagulls occasionally.

0'17" car driving by slowly, idling.

0'35" stopping, car doors opening, closing, close by. What is this all about?
