Re: 9-1-1 for Campuses or Business Complexes

Dave, at McGill we use 911 and 9-911 as our primary emergency
numbers. We previously had an internal 3000 number that is still
active as well.

Any time someone places a call to 911 on an internal line the call
is picked up by our 24 hour dispatch central and at the same time
the Montreal 911 dispatch centre comes on-line. We have a computer
screen which will ID the caller's location and phone number. We are
able to provide additional information to the 911 dispatch centre
while the caller is still on-line. This helps because sometimes the
callers don't know the civic address of the building they are in
etc...

At the same time we are able to dispatch a security patrol to the
emergency. The systems works well although we have a number of false
calls because you need to dial "9" to reach an outside line.. so a
number of long distance calls ex 911555-5555 can trip the system.

I am trying to bring our other Campus on the same system. They have
an emergency line that is covered 24/7 but they have to release the
line and then place the 911 call. I am working on a system now that
will direct dial into the Fire Departments dispatch system so that
our dispatcher can push a button while on line that will send an
alert that there is a fire emergency on campus. With the next
upgrade of our alarm system this will become an automatic dispatch
when some of our fire panels go into alarm. The unit is a digital
dialer that has voice and paging capability.

Let me know if you require more detailed info.
