Fricatives

Fricatives are speech sounds where the airstream is constricted in the oral cavity by an articular (lips, tongue) at some point of articulation (lips, upper teeth, alveolar ridge, hard palate, soft palate, velum) Fricatives may voiced or unvoiced.

The basic fricatives include:

voiceless:

  1. labiodental
  2. dental, alveolar
  3. palatal
  4. velar

voiced:

  1. labiodental
  2. interdental
  3. dental, alveolar
  4. palatal
  5. velar
