Stops are speech sounds where the airstream is momentarily blocked in the oral cavity by an articular (lips, tongue) at some point of articulation (lips, upper teeth, alveolar ridge, hard palate, soft palate, velum): Stops may voiced or unvoiced:

The basic stops include:

voiceless:

  1. [p] (bilabial)
  2. [t] (dental, alveolar)
  3. [k] (velar)

voiced:

  1. [b] (bilabial)
  2. [d] (dental, alveolar)
  3. [g] (velar).
