The platform switch can largely be mitigated since you're already on 7.2.6.  https://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Rolling_Upgrades would be a really good idea in your case.  The bonus with that, assuming you either have your ldap systems separated or can afford to bring up a couple new vm's to help transition, is you can make a nearly seamless migration possible, while users are still able to use their email throughout the upgrade.

I'm actually looking at MeritMail as a middle ground.

We're RHEL5/ZCS 7.2.6 so it's going to be a platform switch. I've done that before (ZCS 4 or 5 on RHEL4), but it's hard to justify at our small scale.
