FARAC

Background

In December 1995 the Dean's Advisory Committee in the Faculty of Arts at Simon Fraser University approved the formation of a Faculty of Arts Research Advisory Committee. The committee is composed of one representative from each of the 14 Departments and Schools in the Faculty of Arts and is co-chaired by the two Faculty of Arts Research Liaison Officers (FRLOs) appointed by the Dean of Arts.

Purpose

The FARAC is charged with improving the research effort of faculty members in the Faculty of Arts. It is intended to provide information to the Faculty of Arts Research Liaison Officers which can be transmitted to the Dean of Arts, the Vice-President (Research) and the President of the University. Information on research funding, proposed changes in representation on granting councils and committees and other matters originating from the University administration is relayed to Departments through FARAC. Other interesting pages to visit:

There are now several easily accessible sources of information on grants, university research policies, forms, databases and other items relevant to research activities at SFU. These generally fall into two types: e-mail lists and World Wide Web (WWW) materials.

1. E-Mail Lists:

There are several lists which have been set up by the Office of Research Services to distribute information on grant opportunities, program information, deadlines and other aspects of research related to the major Canadian granting councils. These include:

"sshrc-list" - for information on the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada

"nserc-list" - for information on the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

"mrc-list" - for information on the Medical Research Council of Canada

You can subscribe to these lists by entering the SFU UNIX system (e.g. fraser.sfu.ca or beaufort.sfu.ca) and typing "maillist" at the UNIX prompt. The ask to (J)oin the selected list. Any messages sent to this list will be automatically sent to your e-mail address. To post a message to a list type the name of the list where you would normally type in the address of the intended recipient. To unsubscribe from the list, follow the same procedure.

There is a new list "farac-list" which has been set up to aid this committee. It operates in an identical fashion to the above lists. All Departmental FARAC representatives have been subscribed to this list.

2. WWW Sources

A great deal of information on grants and other research activities is now available through the World Wide Web. WWW pages established at SFU provide links to many sources scattered throughout the Internet in a variety of countries which are relevant to SFU researchers.

To access WWW materials you require a browser such as Netscape or Mosaic which are provided free of cha rge from a variety of sources include Academic Computing Services. A text only UNIX browser (lynx) is available and can be accessed by typing "lynx" at the UNIX prompt . WWW sites are identified by a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). The URL for the SFU homepage is "http://www.sfu.ca". From this starting point you can usually access a wide range of documents by pointing and clicking on various "hyperlinks" contained in the homepage and subsequent pages. If you access subsequent pages using the actual URL, be sure to specify it exactly as listed, including its case.

A Faculty of Arts homepage exists at URL:http://www.sfu.ca/arts. This page includes a link to a Faculty of Arts Research homepage at URL:http://www.sfu.ca/arts/RLO.html. This page contains a wide variety of links related to grant databases, contacts within and outside the university (including the homepages of major granting councils), and other types of information. Th is page also contains a link to a homepage established for this committee at URL:http:www.sfu.ca/~howlett/FARAC.html.

Within the university two other excellent sources are the homepages of the Vice President Research at URL:http://www.sfu.ca/vpresearch and the brand-new homepage of the Office of Research Services at URL:http://www.sfu.ca/ors.
