Articles of Interest to SFU Staff |
HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE CLASSROOM In an effort to expose her students to the operational versus the theoretical side of the human resource function in business, Dr. Dianne Cyr has been inviting human resource practitioners to be guest lecturers. Her students are in third year Business Administration and they are taking the human resource course elective. Although the functional areas within an HR department tend to be similar across business enterprises, there are some differences. In this regard, Dr. Cyr is asking human resource staff from different industries to explain how their particular operation functions. Practitioners from a downtown hotel have spoken to the students regarding personnel practices in the hotel industry, and, most recently, Human Resources at SFU had been asked to provide guest lecturers. Bob Broad and Sheva Bridgmohan were the first to be called upon to speak to the 150 bright-eyed and bushy-tailed third year students. Bob gave an overview of the function and structure of Human Resources and Sheva spoke specifically to the staffing function at SFU. It was interesting to note that not one of the 150 students were aware that they could work at SFU as part time, temporary employees while pursuing their degree. The presentation took forty five minutes and a further fifteen minutes were taken up with questions about human resources. As Bob and Sheva were invited back to give the same lecture next semester, it would seem that the idea was a success. Other staff from Human Resources will also be called upon to speak about their specific functional area(s) of responsibility.
