3) Program related information

a) Renewal of the Tri-Agency Financial Administration

Along with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), CIHR is pleased to launch the Renewal of the Tri-Agency Financial Administration.

A large part of the Renewal will involve streamlining and simplifying the administration and use of grant funds by creating a principles-based Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide. The details about the Renewal, as well as progress to date, are now available online.

b) CIHR unveils new vision and tools to support health research trainees

CIHR is pleased to present its newly revamped health research training website, a one-stop-shop for everything related to training, including: information about training opportunities and how to apply for them; tools to help trainees enhance their career prospects, like the Individual Career Development Plan; a curated list of the latest reports and studies related to training; and helpful links to policies, strategies, news and events.

c) Health Research Community Survey on Peer Review Committees

CIHR is committed to working with the research community to ensure that peer review continues to improve. One of our key priorities is ensuring that the composition of Project Grant peer review committees and their mandates cover the breadth of research areas within CIHR's mandate and that the peer review needs of interdisciplinary applications are met.

To this end, the Nominated Principal Applicants in the Fall 2017 competition have been asked to fill out a survey about peer review committees. A separate version of the survey is now available to the entire community. See More

d) TCPS 2 (2014): Consultation on Research Involving Human Cells and Cell Lines

The Panel on Research Ethics seeks feedback on a set of proposed changes to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans TCPS 2 (2014).

This set of proposed revisions pertains to research involving human cells and cell lines. Written comments on the proposed changes will be accepted until November 30, 2017. All comments received will be posted online unless the contributor requests that they remain confidential.

e) Dr. Michael Rudnicki winner of 2017 Dr. George Karpati Research Award

On September 14th, Dr. Michael Rudnicki was recognized by Muscular Dystrophy Canada for his outstanding scientific contribution to neuromuscular research. Dr. Rudnicki is the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Genetics, the Scientific Director of the Stem Cell Network, Director of the Regenerative Medicine Program at the Ottawa Hospital, and is a member of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Rudnicki received the annual George Karpati Research Award in recognition for his teams discovery of a protein called dystrophin that is missing in those living with muscular disorders which is a major structural component of the muscle. From this discovery, researchers are looking at ways to improve or partially repair the protein.

Upon receiving the news, Dr. Rudnicki said, I knew Dr. Karpati when I was a young scientist and looked up to him as a mentor. I am extremely honoured to receive this award.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada recently sat down with Dr. Rudnicki to discuss his important research on muscle stem cells.
