Fwd: New Partnership with DND in Support of Discovery Research

The Office of Research Services has received the following information which we are passing on to our list members.

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to inform you that NSERC is launching a new initiative in partnership with the Department of National Defence (DND) through their agency Defence Research and Development Canada. The DND/NSERC Discovery Grant Supplements aim to support unclassified university-based research dedicated to the development of non-weapon specific technologies with dual-use applications in defence and security target areas.

Through the Discovery Grant Program, the Department of National Defence will provide funding for up to 20 supplements of $40,000 per year for three years to successful Discovery Grant applicants who are performing research within target areas specified by the Department of National Defence. This initiative falls under a renewed Memorandum of Understanding between NSERC and the Department of National Defence, along with the DND/NSERC Research Partnership Grants, which continue to be a success for both organizations.

Details on the Program

This new initiative will be launched in time for the 2017 Discovery Grants competition. Researchers will be able to indicate their interest in applying for a DND/NSERC Discovery Grant Supplement, and provide written justification of how their proposed research fits within the target areas identified by the Department of National Defence, through the Research Portal as part of their Discovery Grant application. Evaluation Groups will evaluate and rate applications in accordance with established Discovery Grant evaluation criteria, without evaluating the DND justification section.

Following the NSERC evaluation, the applications and ratings of the successful Discovery Grant applicants who indicated interest in the DND Supplement will be forwarded to an internal committee at the Department of National Defence. That committee will select the recipients of the Supplement based in part on the Discovery Grant application ratings as well as the extent to which the proposed research activity addresses the Department’s defence and security target areas.

Additional details on the initiative will be available on NSERC’s website shortly. Should you have any questions about the DND/NSERC Discovery Grant Supplement, please email NSERC at dndsuppmdn@nserc-crsng.gc.ca.

Thank you and please feel free to circulate this information to interested colleagues.

Regards,
