The Office of Research Services has received the following information which we are forwarding to our e-mail list members:

Introduction to Assessing Disclosure Risk: Wednesday, September 27, 2017, 11:30 - 12:30

Join ICPSR for a free one hour webinar: Introduction to Assessing Disclosure Risk

Disclosure refers to the unauthorized release of information about an individual or organization. Researchers who work with human participants, proprietary or other sensitive information need to be aware of disclosure risk--especially when preparing data for sharing and re-use.

This webinar, prepared by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and presented by John E. Marcotte, will describe concepts in disclosure including:

  • sensitivity (health information, drug use, criminal activity, business intelligence)
  • how data can be re-mediated to reduce disclosure risk
  • how to provide safe access to data which has disclosure risk.

John E. Marcotte, PhD is the Data Security Officer for ICPSR where he trains ICPSR staff on disclosure risk and is responsible for vetting output for disclosure issues.   In addition, Dr. Marcotte reviews security plans for restricted-use data.  He has presented on providing secure access to restricted-use data at conferences such as the International Association for Social Sciences Information Services and Technology (IASSIST) and EDUCAUSE.
