1.  Next GEN Seminar: The Potential of Learning Objects
.......................................................

Date: 10 – 23 September 2001
Moderator: David Wiley

People claim that learning objects will revolutionize online learning. Promises of lower delivery costs and automated, individualized instructional delivery abound, and even international standards bodies like the IEEE are caught up in the hype. But what is the real potential of learning objects? Is there any hope of the promises being fulfilled? Is there another role for learning objects that educators and students are missing altogether? During our next seminar, Dr. David Wiley will lead a frank discussion about the future of online learning.

David Wiley, Ph.D. is currently Assistant Professor of Instructional Technology at Utah State University. As a graduate student, David authored one of the first dissertations on learning objects (Learning Object Design and Sequencing Theory), and edited the first book available on the topic (The Instructional Use of Learning Objects). David's research programs have been favourably reviewed by publications such as The Economist, MIT Technology Review, and Time, and he is currently working on learning objects research funded by the National Science Foundation and the Cisco Learning Institute.
