1. Residency in the New Age of Online Learning begins today!
.......................................................
Date: 4 - 17 February, 2002
Moderator: Alan Davis and Kathleen Matheos

Post secondary students are required to complete a minimum number of credits
at their home institution in order to receive a credential from that
university or college. In the new age of online learning and changing
demographics of student populations, it is time to revisit these policies
which are historically rooted in the traditional notions of residential
experiences and college life.

    * Are these historical bases still valid in the era of online learning?
    * How is residency impacted by online learning, and vice-versa?
    * What barriers and protections do residency requirements offer learners
and institutions?

Alan Davis is Chair of the Canadian Virtual University (CVU) Advisory
Committee, and Vice President, Academic, Athabasca University. Kathleen
Matheos is Assistant Professor of Distance Education, Extension Division,
University of Saskatchewan, and is involved in Canada's Collaboration for
Online Higher Education and Research (COHERE)

Your participation in this seminar is very important to us! Contributions by
GEN members will be summarized in preparation for the upcoming CADE/ICDE
conference in Calgary, May 2002, where CVU, COHERE, and Canada¹s Campus
Connection will be offering a session on this topic.

2. Join us for Week 4 of Sex, GENder, and Online Education
.......................................................
Date: 14 January - 17 February, 2002
Moderator: Cher Hill

Are there gender differences in learning and if so what social mechanisms
reinforce gender differences?
What can we do to make online course more accessible?

During the first 3 weeks of our seminar on Sex, GENder, and Online Education
we shared experiences and explored issues related to access to computer
technologies and participation in online environments. During week 4 we will
move into the area of course content, materials, and curriculum. Together we
will continue to critically examine the roles of sex and GENder in education
and collectively establish strategies for developing more equitable learning
environments.

This seminar is designed to easily accommodate newcomers at any time. Please
join us!

3. Upcoming Seminar: Synchronous CMC for Faculty Transition to E-Learning
.......................................................
Date: 25 February 2002 - 10 March 2002
Moderator: Michael Power

In this seminar we will explore the potential of synchronous
computer-mediated-communication as a course design tool for faculty. A
matrix model for "accelerated web course design", designed by Michael Power
of Universite de Moncton, is based on a course design framework which
emphasizes structure and dialogue.

These dates are tentative and further details can be found at
http://vu.cs.sfu.ca/vu/tlnce/PublicReg/ as they are available.

4. Tips for GEN members
.......................................................

How do I get in touch with another GEN member?

GEN provides an opportunity for you to meet educators who share your
teaching and research interests. While we currently do not provide a roster
of our membership, you can obtain an individual's email addresses simply by
clicking in her or his hyperlinked name, anywhere in the Virtual-U
environment.

We are developing tools to edit and share member profiles, which will assist
with GEN member partnerships and collaborations in the future. Stay tuned!
